ThermoGuard: Thermal Efficiency & Lower Reefer Costs
Legend has it that one of our most significant engineering breakthroughs didn’t happen in an R&D lab. It happened during a snack break.
Years ago, one of our production engineers was snacking on a bag of potato chips when he noticed how the metallic packaging kept the chips fresh by completely sealing out moisture. It was a simple observation, but it sparked a brilliant idea.
If a thin layer of packaging could protect a potato chip from humidity, we could apply that exact same principle to a reefer liner.
Why Dry Insulation Performs Better Over Time
That single spark of inspiration led to the creation of our patented ThermoGuard trailer liner, technology that delivers dependable thermal performance on our Everest reefers.
We engineered ThermoGuard with a proprietary barrier layer that blocks moisture from entering the insulation. When it stays dry, insulation works exactly as intended and with greater reliability. This means Everest offers thermal integrity that also significantly reduces the workload on your transport refrigeration unit (TRU) over time.
ThermoGuard is built into both our single- and multi-temp models. Take a look at how Everest delivers outstanding performance here.
How Thermal Efficiency Impacts Reefer Operating Costs
One of our customers recently told us how ThermoGuard made a difference in delivering reliability they could depend on for their ice cream distribution.
“We choose Great Dane because of the quality of their products. Many people don’t know this, but Le Mars, Iowa is the Ice Cream Capital of the World, and ice cream distribution is our niche business.
Because of that, when we customized our Great Dane reefers, we equipped them with ThermoGuard liners, knowing they will hold the right temperature better than anything else out there.” - Jeff Arens, Vice President for Schuster Co.
Here’s how ThermoGuard stands out on the road:
- Blocks moisture: Our patented protection stops water vapor from degrading insulation.
- Maximizes payload capacity: By preventing water weight gain inside the trailer walls, you can haul more freight.
- Reduces fuel consumption: Because the TRU doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain set temperatures, ThermoGuard helps decrease fuel costs. Bonus Benefit: Reduced TRU runtime and fuel consumption also help lower emissions and environmental impact.
- Extends trailer life: Keeping walls dry protects the trailer’s structural integrity, increasing the trailer’s service life.
- Delivers cargo safely: Reliable temperature control means your temperature-sensitive freight arrives in perfect condition, every time.
Five Years. Zero Weight Gain.
Jeff Arens also saw another significant benefit that can be attributed to ThermoGuard – no water weight gain. Here’s what he told us:
“It used to be, the older a trailer was, the more it weighed. But we don’t see that anymore with our Great Dane trailers. Before we operated Great Dane reefers, we weighed our trailers when they were new and again at five years. We found that some had gained 1,500 pounds from water weight gain.
Now, our Great Dane trailers are huge for our ROI. We don’t see any more weight gain over five years. This means we can maximize shipping weight and meet our customers’ requirements. As an added bonus, they hold up well and have a good resale value.” - Jeff Arens, Vice President for Schuster Co.
