How the Right Floor Helps With Reefer Durability
Forklifts, pallet jacks, and heavy freight put constant stress on a refrigerated trailer floor, one of the hardest-working components of a reefer.
The two most common flooring options for refrigerated trailers are flat floors and reefer duct floors. Understanding how they work can help you choose the right fit for your fleet.
Let’s take a look.
A Strong Floor Foundation Starts Below the Surface
Our engineers designed the Everest reefer floor system with welded seams to help seal out moisture, while composite sills provide structural support and help defend against moisture intrusion. The sills are secured with corrosion-resistant fasteners featuring a multi-layered protective coating, while an impact-resistant thermoplastic sub-pan adds another layer of durability beneath the floor.

Flat Floors: Built for Heavy Palletized Loads
If your operation moves mostly palletized freight, a flat floor is often the best choice.
Our heavy-duty cargo flat floors are rated to support a 20,000-pound concentrated load rating, the highest forklift-rated reefer floor in the industry. It’s available with smooth, Safety-Grip, ridged, or textured surfaces so fleets can choose the option that best matches their operation.
Beyond strength, flat floors offer several practical advantages:
- Ideal for grocery, dairy, and foodservice applications with concentrated pallet loads.
- Allows moveable bulkheads to seal tightly, a great choice for multi-temperature deliveries.
- Easier to move small-wheeled delivery carts throughout the trailer.
- Simplifies cleaning between loads.

Reefer Duct Floors: Designed for Better Airflow
You may depend on consistent airflow just as much as load capacity. That’s where duct floors can be the optimal choice.
Reefer duct floors help distribute cold air throughout the trailer, allowing refrigerated units to maintain consistent temperatures from front to back, for improved temperature management.
Our heavy-duty reefer duct floor is TTMA-rated at 18,000 pounds and has a unique advantage — the channel is built into the outer edges of the floor assembly. This allows air and electrical lines to be routed along the sides instead of through the center, providing greater floor durability.
Combined with two- to four-inch insulation and insulated floor extrusions, the design helps maximize thermal efficiency while maintaining strength.
Protect Your Sidewalls from Everyday Wear
A durable floor is only part of the equation. Scuffbands help protect these high-impact areas.

Ready to Roll with the right floor
A durable floor is one of those features that continues to deliver value long after your trailer leaves the dealership.
