What is Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipping?

LTL shipping is a freight shipping method where shipments from multiple customers are consolidated into a single truckload. Since the freight does not fill the entire truck, the space is shared with other loads. LTL is ideal for businesses that don’t have enough freight to fill a full truck but still need to ship goods at an affordable rate.

What is freight class and how does it affect LTL shipping?

Freight class is a system used by LTL carriers to classify goods based on factors such as density, handling, and liability. The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) assigns a number to each freight class, which directly impacts the cost of shipping. The higher the class, the more expensive the shipment will be.

How can I improve my fleet’s efficiency in LTL shipping?

Consolidate Shipments: Whenever possible, combine multiple smaller shipments into a single LTL shipment to save on costs.

Use Technology: Leverage transportation management systems (TMS) for better route planning, tracking, and reporting.

Negotiate Rates: Building a relationship with your LTL carrier and negotiating volume discounts can help reduce shipping costs.

What is the difference between LTL and TL (full truckload) shipping?

LTL (Less Than Truckload): For shipments that don’t fill an entire truck. You share space with other shippers, and the cost is based on the portion of the truck your shipment occupies.

TL (Full Truckload): For larger shipments that fill an entire truck. FTL provides a dedicated truck for your shipment, typically resulting in faster transit times but higher costs.
